Day 9: Cold & Irritable

Today was not such a fun day. Even though it’s the first beautiful sunny and warm day in Hong Kong in several months, I’m weak, cold and irritable.  I woke up this morning with a little sore throat, most likely because the last 2 days I’ve been out and about at an all day conference, talking with lots of people and standing on my feet most of the time. While the detox program says that I should slow down my activity, I didn’t quite do that and now I understand why. I’m now sitting on my couch relaxing and drinking lots of water as I type this.

Since yesterday, I’ve been able to eat two healthy meals a day including salads, vegetable soup, brown rice, and fish or chicken. I’m still only eating moderate portions of these meals as my body is getting re-oriented with putting solid food in my stomach. It feels great to eat and I’m a lot more mindful of the food that I put in my body.

I’ve lost 2.5kg since I started the detox program less than 10 days ago. I haven’t been this light since I was 19 years old and everyone around me says that I look very skinny. Like I said before, I didn’t think I had much fat to lose, but sure enough I did.  Personally, I don’t like being this small. I know I haven’t lost much muscle because every few days I test out my ability to bench press a certain weight or squat a certain weight and I don’t feel like this has changed at all.

The “journey” of this detox is not very pleasant, but I guess most people do the detox to reach a healthier “destination.” In 2 more days I will be finished with the detox program and will share with you my thoughts about whether or not getting to this “healthier” destination is worth it.

The big caveat for most people doing a detox is that after the program, these folks will just go back to their previous unhealthy habits and binge on toxic foods. This is certainly a big danger and the reason why many detox program participants say that the detox “didn’t work.”  Effectively transitioning out of a detox into a new healthy lifestyle is critical and this is exactly what I help people do as part of my executive health coaching business.
